It all reads very futuristic, but does the newcomer deliver what it promises?
To answer this, I took a close look at the Xiaomi toothbrush and wrote a comprehensive review of my experience.

Xiaomi, Oclean or Sooca toothbrush? – Clarification
I was a little confused when I started looking into the different toothbrushes from Xiaomi
In this review, I report my experience with the Xiaomi toothbrush Oclean X.
Xiaomi should be a household name to many by now. The Chinese manufacturer has started a few years ago to offer a wide range of electronic devices also in Germany.
- To keep up with the rapid development in the market, Xiaomi regularly buys smaller companies to sell their innovative products.
- So, for example, Xiaomi sells Sooca and Oclean toothbrushes as independent brands.
It’s easiest to think of the products as independent of Xiaomi. For example, even though Oclean is from Xiaomi, the toothbrush won’t work with the Xiaomi Home app, which you may already have for your fitness band.
Nonetheless, the quality is uniformly good and is checked centrally, which of course brings great benefits.
Now, however, to the actual review of the Xiaomi toothbrush Oclean X.
Unpacking & First impression
The packaging of the Oclean X looks very high quality to me – a bit like a smartphone.
The front of the box is adorned with a large photo of the toothbrush. On the back of the box are some specifications and manufacturer’s information.
Opening the box reveals the toothbrush in a plastic case.
Underneath the toothbrush you will find the charging cable and the holder. To this I write in the section battery & charging even more, because the functionality is already special.
At the very bottom of the box is the English instruction manual.
Here, unfortunately, a small minus: I would like it better if the instructions were available in German. But since at least the app is available in German, you can probably get over this.
Scope of delivery

The handpiece is very light, just under 100 grams, noticeably less than competing models. Nevertheless, it looks quite robust and valuable. The surface is very smooth and feels a bit like porcelain.
Unfortunately, the toothbrush comes without a travel case, which surprises me a little with the long battery life. After all, if you can get by for three weeks on one charge, you don’t want to just pack your toothbrush in your toiletry bag.
The display, of course, immediately catches my eye and makes me curious about the features.
My overall impression is positive:
- The design is well thought out, not cluttered and makes sense.
- The cleaning effort will be minimal.
- Once turned on, the display comes to life and greets you with the initial setup.
Note:Before turning it on for the first time, if possible, download and open the Oclean app to create a user account.
If you wish, you can now use the touch display to select a cleaning program or simply press the button a second time to start the toothbrush.
4 basic cleaning modes
This question is not so easy to answer. The Oclean X has four basic cleaning modes
- Standard Cleaning: For everyday use, this mode uses the normal cleaning setting.
- Cleaning for sensitive teeth: If you have sensitive teeth, go for this setting, which reduces the intensity of the brush.
- Whitening: This polishing mode removes discolored areas on your teeth for a brighter smile.
- Gum Massage: Massages the gums & ensures healthy teeth with better blood circulation.
With four cleaning modes, the Oclean X is comparable to top performers like the Sonicare DiamondClean (which has five modes)
20 cleaning programs & customization
In addition, the Xiaomi toothbrush has 20 pre-set brushing programs that you can customize to suit your preferences and needs.
The following is a small selection of programs with duration indicated.
Daily cleaning
- Standard Cleaning: For people with normal, healthy teeth (2:00)
- Standard Teeth Spa: Standard cleaning and massage (3:00)
Intensive Cleaning
- Strong Cleaning: specially designed to remove stubborn tartar. (3:00)
- Super Cleaning: Possibly strongest cleaning program with full intensity. In my opinion, not suitable for every day! (3:00)
Tooth Whitening
- Strong Whitening: Suitable for wine lovers (2:30)
- Super Whitening: For example, if you have coffee discoloration on your teeth that you would like to get rid of (2:30)
- Newbie Whitening: Extra gentle cleaning program if the standard whitening programs are too strong for you at the beginning (2:30)
Gentle cleaning for sensitive teeth
- Sensitive Cleaning: For sensitive teeth and necks of teeth (3:00)
Cleaning & Massage of gums
- Gum Care Cleaning: Gum Cleaning (2:00)
- Gum Care Cleaning: teeth and gums cleaning (longer program) (3:20)
- Gentle Teeth Spa: Suitable for sensitive gums with massage (3:00)
For braces wearers
- Braces Cleaning: Special program for wearers of fixed braces (3:00)

Cleaning result
I like the higher intensities and stronger brushing modes, but I’ve also thankfully been spared sensitive teeth and bleeding gums so far
My teeth feel clean when I feel them with my tongue. Even the problematic areas where the gum line meets the tooth are free of plaque.
An electric toothbrush still can’t replace dental floss, oral irrigators or interdental brushes. That’s why you need one of these additional tools in your bathroom.
Of course, even the best brushing program will not replace flossing or an oral irrigator. Nonetheless, choosing the program that’s right for you can help you keep healthier, better-kept teeth.
This is where the Oclean app comes in, as it can even help you choose the right brushing schedule.
Using the smartphone app properly
Of course, the Oclean X works without an app – press the big button twice and you’re good to go.

Pair the app with your toothbrush
The design of the Oclean smartphone app is very simple, but the number of features is immense.
Bathroom without a smartphone? For many, it’s impossible to imagine life without it. So why not use your smartphone wisely while brushing your teeth…
When you first open it, you are prompted to set up a user account. That’s done quickly. After that, the app asks you a few questions about your dental status to help you figure out which brushing schedule is best for you
Tip: Download the app first before turning on the toothbrush for the first time!
Select cleaning programs or create your own
Here the Oclean shines with a wide selection of pre-made programs – 20 in number! Each one can be customized to suit your needs.
It’s like having your dentist create a completely customized brushing schedule for your needs: With the Xiaomi Oclean X’s brushing schedules, that’s possible at home.
I felt a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of programs at first, but all are well described and easy to understand.
- If you don’t like the pre-made cleaning schedules, you can easily put together your own.
- The great advantage is that you will certainly be more concerned with your cleaning habits to develop the perfect cleaning plan.
For me, a definite plus!
Admitting: The interest may fade after a few weeks, but that’s why the app creates a report after each brushing.

Reports on your toothbrushing behavior
The toothbrush can identify 8 areas in your mouth using the built-in sensors. These are divided into 4 quadrants – left and right, top and bottom.
For each quadrant, you get a score at the end that tells you how well you brushed.
The Xiaomi toothbrush has a built-in timer that makes it much easier to control whether you’re brushing all areas of your mouth evenly.
Every 30 seconds, the Xiaomi toothbrush stops for a tenth of a second to let you know it’s time to move on to the next area.
Score values from 0-100 are assigned to each zone after brushing.
- Even with intentionally poor cleaning behavior, I rarely got scores below 40. However, the app already sees that as a very poor score.
- If you completely omit an area, this is registered and you can see this after cleaning.
This sounded a little complicated to me at first – I know where my teeth are after all!
However, I have to admit: If I do not focus 100% on brushing my teeth, it happens that I neglect areas. If you feel similarly, the app helps immensely to prevent such small omissions.
Learn to brush your teeth better actively
For each brushing time period, the app gives you an image with a brief description of exactly what you need to do
Incorrectly brushing your teeth with too much pressure (as in the example picture) can possibly lead to gingivitis and cause still other damage to your teeth.
Have you recently taken a closer look at the question of “How do I actually brush my teeth correctly?” Because that’s exactly what the Oclean app aims to do.
The summary at the end actually helps you to gradually optimize your toothbrushing process.
It’s a bit like having your own personal dentist in the bathroom with you, explaining how to brush properly.
- On the calendar in the app, you can see at a glance how your stats are improving over time.
- This is a nice motivation and helps you maintain a high level in the long run.
Almost as a matter of course, the Oclean X has a switchable pressure control. This means that if you put too much pressure on the teeth, the brush automatically switches off.
Having to take your phone into the bathroom with you every time can be a bit annoying.
However, this is where the Oclean comes into its own: The most important information is not only shown to you on your smartphone, but also on the toothbrush display.
Touch display: functions & settings
Of course, the Oclean X’s color touch screen immediately catches your eye. The display shows you much more information than just the battery level or a countdown.
I have to say it first: you can see the current weather in your location. I found that totally hilarious and sometimes even handy.
Now, however, to the more important features of the mini-screen.
Short reports
It tells you if you missed an area, w hat well you brushed all areas, and w hat firmly you pressed on the toothbrush.
The information on the touchscreen is much slimmed down compared to the app, but I find it completely adequate.
- The short reports are interesting and give a quick overview.
- They help you brush the sections better and get healthier teeth.
If you then want to know exactly why a section has been given a lower value, you can look it up on your smartphone.
Settings via the touchscreen
The most important aspect, of course, is that you can use the touchscreen to operate the toothbrush. First and foremost, this means that you can select your brushing programs and intensity
Even without a smartphone in hand, you can of course select the cleaning programs. I even manage to do this quite quickly in the test. I can therefore praise the operation of the display.
I like the idea because it means you can do without taking your smartphone into the bathroom with you every time.
There are two touch-sensitive areas to the left and right of the screen.
You can use these to navigate the menu. Unfortunately, this does not go quite as smoothly as you are used to from your smartphone by now, and the screen is understandably also much smaller.
Notwithstanding, the touch-sensitive areas on the left and right of the screen allow you to navigate the menu.
Despite this, the information is easy to read and the touch gestures are quickly and cleanly recognized with a little practice.
The ready-made cleaning programs can be selected snappily and to start you simply press the big button.
Care & Durability
The display is completely recessed into the handpiece, and so far I haven’t had any dirt accumulate.
If you simply rinse the toothbrush under running water each time after brushing and towel dry, it will stay bright and white for a long time.
Strong battery & fast charging
The Oclean X leaves a very good impression with me in terms of battery. The runtime, charging time and power supply with USB have many advantages.
I also find the flexible charger exciting.
Flexible charging cradle
The charging cradle of the Oclean X consists of two parts. You can attach the magnetic base plate to the bathroom wall with an adhesive pad
This allows you to charge the brush standing up or while it’s hanging on the wall! It looks pretty cool in my opinion.
Fast charging with USB
The 800 mAh battery is powered by USB. That means you can easily charge the toothbrush on the go with a powerbank.
Conveniently, you can charge the Xiaomi Oclean X with USB. I find this ideal if you have the toothbrush with you in your luggage.
I love this solution and have often wondered why no other manufacturer has implemented this before.
Admittedly, USB connections are not waterproof, of course. So you have to be a little careful not to flood the charging cradle.
Strong battery life & performance
Although the battery isn’t significantly stronger than competing models, you can expect at least three weeks of use.
I was amazed when I charged the battery! Within just under 3 hours, it was completely full.
What also amazed me personally is how quickly the battery is charged. After only 2-3 hours, the battery is full again and you can you the next 20 to 30 days used.
- According to the manufacturer, runtimes of up to 40 days are even possible when the toothbrush is used on the lowest setting.
- I have not tested this myself, as I prefer the high frequency and my own programs are also longer than the 2-3 minute brushing programs.
I find it particularly good that the brush still provides full power even at low battery levels.
Sonic technology
All Oclean toothbrushes are oscillating sonic brushes, similar to Philips Sonicare models, for example.

The brush head vibrates at tens of thousands of vibrations per minute.
- This creates a flow of liquid between your teeth as well as below your gum line.
- Simultaneously, the bristles sweep across your teeth to remove plaque and massage your gums.
On paper, the Oclean X’s motor is a little weaker and slower than that of a comparable Oral B or Sonicare toothbrush. However, in my opinion, that doesn’t mean you have to be prepared for lower brushing performance.
Even if the loud hum of other sonic toothbrushes annoys you, the Oclean X is a good alternative. I think it sounds a little quieter than the competition, the vibrations are not so high-frequency. The cleaning performance convinces me as I said.
Brush heads: variety & replacement
Here the Oclean is unfortunately not as strong as some other providers.
The standard brush head shown is included 1x with the purchase of the Xiaomi toothbrush.
The downer is that while there are quite a few different brush heads available to cover a variety of needs, unfortunately only two are available for order on Amazon.
Xiaomi Oclean X medium hard standard head
- For hard-to-reach places in the oral cavity.
- Gentle on gums thanks to rounded brushes.
I like the standard brush head and find the cleaning performance very good. The bristles are a little stiffer and especially suitable for healthy gums.
Xiaomi Oclean X soft sensitive brush head
- With extra soft bristles.
- Protects and already especially the gums.
The Sensitive brush head is softer than the standard head. Select this one if you have gum problems such as gingivitis, gum pain, or bleeding gums.
Other brush heads
But I can very well understand if you prefer the larger selection. All heads can be ordered from, for example, Gearbest.
I was for many years also the owner of a Sonicare toothbrush and tried through the various brush heads that Philips offers.
In the end, I always ended up with the standard heads. On the one hand, because they are the cheapest to have and on the other hand, because the added value of the other heads has not opened up to me personally.
Conclusion: Innovative with convincing results
In one sentence: the Oclean X is the latest of the new – with a few small compromises. The cleaning performance is convincing, the handpiece is robust, high-quality and well thought out.
Thorough cleaning combined with modern technology features make the Xiaomi toothbrush a great device
The app is solidly designed and continually helps me take and maintain my teeth cleaning to a higher level.
I think the solution with the wall mount for charging is great. Also, it’s great to be able to charge the toothbrush via USB. This is a feature that I really no longer want to miss.
Nevertheless, there are also a few drawbacks:
- Limited availability of brush heads
- No travel case
- App required for full functionality (at least initial setup)
I like the touchscreen and the ability to set a lot of things without the app. For everyday tooth cleaning, this is absolutely sufficient.
- Not least, the Oclean X is priced much lower than a comparable model from Philips or Braun.
- This makes the decision a little easier to make, especially if it’s your first sonic toothbrush.
If, like me, you’re a bit of a technophile and want to use apps and sensors to optimize your dental health, the Oclean X is the perfect choice.
