This children’s toothbrush makes brushing easier thanks to a great cleaning & useful extras like a timer. What else you need to know before you buy it!
The Oral-B Junior offers thorough cleaning performance in a child-friendly design. At the same time, it is not aimed at our very little ones, but at slightly older preschoolers or schoolchildren aged 6 years and older.
- At this age at the latest, it is important to think a little further ahead in your child’s daily dental care.
- The built-in timer makes it easy for your child to understand how long they should brush their teeth and when it’s time to change.
What else you need to know about the electric toothbrush, what advantages it offers and what alternatives are available, you will learn in this article.
The Oral-B children’s toothbrushes come in 2 different varieties:
This Oral-B model is available for both children and teenagers. The two electric toothbrushes differ mainly in terms of functions and design:
- The Oral-B Junior children’s toothbrush* is suitable for children aged 6 and over and is available in purple or green. The toothbrush has only 1 mode. Normally, the battery lasts 7-10 days.
- The Oral-B Teen* is intended for teenagers from 12 years. Here, the manufacturer relies on modern colors and a cool design. In this model, it is possible to switch between three different modes. The battery is also a lot more powerful and lasts up to 2 weeks.
Is the Oral-B Junior the right electric toothbrush for my child?
A good dental care and the right toothbrush for children is enormously important from the beginning. In the early years, an ordinary toothbrush is often enough to get the little one used to dental care and to build up basic habits.
Consistent dental care in childhood saves unpleasant treatments & expensive dentures later.
At the latest, when your child starts school, you should reconsider the issue and upgrade the toothbrush.
- The teeth of many children at this age have to go through more than they did in earlier years.
- If your sweetheart is at school or with friends, you can’t constantly monitor what is being eaten.
And that is not even necessary! It is much more important to build confidence in your child and provide him with a better method of cleaning teeth. To get baby teeth (and new teeth) properly clean, a better, more powerful toothbrush is recommended.
Electric toothbrushes made especially for children are especially good for this purpose. One example is the Oral-B Junior toothbrush.
What does the Oral-B Junior children’s toothbrush offer?
This electric toothbrush from Oral-B is aimed directly at children – the colors, as well as the shape and presentation, are designed to help children take daily dental care into their own hands.
Children’s toothbrushes help your child brush their teeth thoroughly every day (and make up for poor technique to some extent)
By the way, for this purpose, the children’s toothbrush is also equipped with practical functions. By means of the built-in timer, the little ones themselves can monitor whether they have already brushed their teeth sufficiently.
I have summarized the most important features here:
- Oral B 3D mode: oscillating, rotating, pulsating
- Up to 10 days battery
- Built-in timer
- Replaceable brush attachments
- Soft brush head included
- 1 mode
- Waterproof handle
Child-friendly colors make brushing teeth a fun experience
For many children, brushing their teeth every day is a big challenge. So it’s no wonder that many harried parents are on the lookout for ways to make dental care easier for their children.
The Oral-B Junior is available in kid-friendly colors – purple or green.
- However, the electric toothbrush is aimed particularly at slightly older children from the age of 6.
- The manufacturers deliberately avoid squeaky-color cartoon characters or the princess look (for this you best reach for the predecessor Oral-B Power Stages).
So your little one feels daily animated to devote himself to his teeth.
In contrast to the ordinary manual toothbrush, the brush offers a much better cleaning result. This is ensured by the slightly larger and particularly soft brush attachment, which corresponds better to children’s teeth.
The workmanship of the children’s toothbrush is high quality and fun
Generally, you can always count on good quality from certain brands – and this toothbrush is no exception. The build quality of the Oral-B Junior is very good
It feels sturdy and comfortable in the hand. The toothbrush is waterproof, so it can be rinsed directly under the water. You can rely on this children’s toothbrush for a long time – by the way, the warranty is 2 years.
While most children’s toothbrushes have extras specifically for kids – in terms of size, they rarely differ from adult models (the battery has to go somewhere, after all).
In terms of size, unfortunately, I could not find much difference from a regular electric toothbrush, which I consider a great pity.
Therefore: for very tender children, this could make handling the toothbrush a problem.
In this yet not quite cheap electric toothbrush for children, the manufacturer has unfortunately added few accessories.
- Included is: the Oral B electric toothbrush, a charging station, a well understandable toothbrushing instructions for children and only 1 brush head.
- Compared to other toothbrush sets, I would have liked a little more accessories or at least several brush attachments here.
In contrast, I particularly like the glossy and colorful card, which was made especially for children. This explains in easy-to-understand form the various stages of proper tooth brushing.
Combinable with extra soft brushes
When you buy an Oral-B Junior, you get an extra soft attachment head in the set. These clinically proven bristles are gentle on teeth and gums. They are particularly suitable for children.
- The outer core of bristles reaches even gaps between teeth and spaces,
- while a denser core of bristles in the middle works on the tooth surface.
When the bristles fade to half, it’s time to change the brush.
Only one of these great brush heads is included in the package. Buying replacements, as is common with most Oral-B attachments, is unfortunately not cheap.
In contrast, it is advantageous that your child can later use other brush attachments from Oral-B with the same toothbrush. Thus, the children’s toothbrush grows with your child, so to speak!
Thanks to the built-in timer, children learn the perfect toothbrushing time!
When your child starts cleaning their teeth, pressing the button starts the only cleaning mode available.
Basically, the following recommendations apply to dental care:
- Your child should brush his teeth thoroughly for 2 minutes 2 times a day!
- While doing so, it is recommended to stay in each quadrant of the mouth for 30 seconds: Top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left.
The toothbrush has a two-minute timer that lets you know in 30-second pulses when it’s time to move on to the next quadrant of the mouth.
Pretended gimmicks like a timer represent one of the most important advantages of electric toothbrushes – they make learning a consistent brushing routine much easier.
After the two 2 minutes have passed, the motor pauses 3 times to indicate the end of the toothbrushing time. This built-in mode makes proper tooth brushing easy to understand even for children.
A big advantage is that you can rely on your child to know what’s right, even if you’re not in the bathroom with them all the time checking on their brushing.
Good brushing performance ensures clean teeth and protection against tooth decay
The rotating toothbrush combined with the small head of the attachment brush cleans even hard-to-reach places in the child’s mouth. Plaque and caries thus have fewer places to go! Enormously important it is the correct handling of the brush: Your child should move the electric toothbrush carefully over the teeth (and not scrub).
The model has a 3D action: this means that the attachment brush rotates and pulsates (8800 rotations, 20000 pulsations per minute)
When brushing teeth, the Oral-B Junior electric toothbrush feels powerful. Even with heavy soiling, the toothbrush makes short work of deposits between the teeth and removes stains on the surface.
A small disadvantage of this good cleaning performance is, in my opinion, the associated volume. However, since children over 6 are generally not as skittish, this is not a major problem.
How does brushing teeth with an electric toothbrush work? – In 4 steps to clean teeth
1.Just hold – not scrub
Unlike the manual toothbrush, it is not good at all to make too many movements with the electric toothbrush. Under no circumstances should your child scrub! It is best to hold the toothbrush on one tooth for a few seconds and then move on to the next.
2. Don’t press too hard
Pressing too hard can lead to gingivitis & diseases like periodontal disease later on.
Since the toothbrush unfortunately does not emit a light signal when pressed too firmly, this point is enormously important. To let the toothbrush do its job, your child doesn’t need much help at all.
3. Brush for two minutes
Your child should clean all four parts of the jaw for 30 seconds. If it is time to switch, the toothbrush will signal. After two minutes of brushing with the Oral-B Junior, the teeth are perfectly cleaned.
4. Twice a day
Also make sure that your child brushes teeth twice a day – preferably in the morning and evening. In doing so, it should also take responsibility itself over time. This is much easier with the right toothbrush!
Oral-B Junior – Actually made for children’s hands?
This children’s toothbrush not only looks very similar to an electric toothbrush for adults, but also offers almost no big difference in terms of size. Only the colors and presentation give an indication of the younger target group.
- Unlike other children’s toothbrushes, this model turns out to be very large.
- Particularly younger children might have problems handling.
The toothbrush should be yes not only well in the hand, but must also be properly guided. For slightly older children, however, the size of the Oral-B Junior should not cause any difficulties.
Tip: Be sure to also check out the Foreo Issa 2 – this brush is actually designed for adults, but is significantly smaller & lighter.
Handling the toothbrush – ergonomic handle?
In general, the electric toothbrush feels good in the hand despite the bulky body. The handle is made of plastic, which feels particularly smooth and supple.
For a better grip provide the white rubber applications, which run from top to bottom. Especially when operating with wet hands, this is a great advantage.
Very practical for children is the playfully simple operation of the Oral-B Junior. By means of a large button in the middle of the brush, it can be easily switched on and off. Since there are no other functions, this is also the only button available.
To charge the toothbrush, your child simply has to put it in the charging station. Within 22 hours, the Oral-B Junior is also already ready for use again.
The children’s toothbrush does not warn of too much pressure
Many adults are surprised when they use an electric toothbrush with an overprint warning for the first time. They don’t realize until then that they’ve been cleaning their teeth with too much pressure for years.
Pressure control on the Oral-B Pro 3000.
That’s why this mechanism should actually be an integral part of every electric toothbrush – but especially in a model for children.
The battery does not always deliver what it promises
The supplied charging station is no different from other models. According to the manufacturer, by the way, the battery lasts for about 10 days after recharging.
However, this also depends on your child’s cleaning style: If your child presses on firmly or cleans particularly extensively, this can also affect the battery performance.
Often overlooked, but saves you from suddenly running out of battery power: the LED charge level indicator.
Many Oral-B users also agree that the battery lasts up to 7 days at most. A battery indicator lets you know when it’s necessary to charge the Oral-B Junior.
Care and Shelf Life
To extend the shelf life of the toothbrush, you should provide good care from the beginning. A lack of hygiene here can even lead to health problems. In addition, this shortens the life of the device.
Make sure to clean the Oral-B Junior thoroughly after each use! Also show your little ones in time how to do this:
- Pull off the head and rinse them both well under the tap.
- Before you put the toothbrush and attachment to dry, you should shake off the water well or pat dry.
From time to time you need to replace the attachment. You can tell this by the fact that the bristles turn quite pale. Do not save too much here. A bad toothbrush attachment can cause inflammation of the teeth and gums
Alternatives to the Oral-B Junior
Who is not quite convinced by the result of the Oral-B Junior children’s toothbrush, can find my alternative suggestions here. The important thing is that daily tooth brushing is not too much of a burden for your child
To do this, often not so many special effects are necessary.
Philips Sonicare HX6322/04 electric toothbrush
Do you have problems encouraging your child to care for their teeth accurately, despite having a new children’s toothbrush? Maybe this Philips toothbrush can help.
Thanks to the interchangeable stickers, your child can put his own stamp on his toothbrush: included are motifs with funny cartoon characters and in various color combinations. The specially designed toothbrush heads protect teeth and ensure perfect cleaning.
Oral-B Pro 600 Electric Toothbrush
Since the size of the Oral-B Junior turns out to be quite bulky, it is also theoretically possible to buy an ordinary adult electric toothbrush for your child. A solid and durable example would be the Oral-B Pro 600.
Included with this toothbrush is also the 2 minute timer, which reminds your child to change the mouth area in 30 second mode.
Tip: Be sure to combine this electric toothbrush with Oral-B*’s soft attachments. This way, you’ll ensure that brushing your teeth is painless and gentle.
Even with pressure control
If you’re going for an adult model anyway, I recommend going for a brush with pressure control right away
Toothbrushes from Oral-B have a pressure control from the Oral-B 1000. However, this is currently quite expensive, so I recommend the Oral-B 2000 as an alternative.
For Sonicare sonic toothbrushes, you only get such a protection mechanism with expensive premium models as well as the new ProtectiveClean range.
Conclusion: good electric toothbrush for children with potential for improvement
The Oral-B Junior is a simple but powerful electric toothbrush for children aged 6 and up. It comes in two great colors and encourages your child to brush their teeth daily
Greatest point of criticism is the yet quite powerful handpiece. For small children’s hands, turning and turning in the mouth becomes a challenge.
The great cleaning performance and ease of use, however, ensure clean teeth in children’s mouths. Thanks to the powerful vibrations, plaque and caries no longer stand a chance.
Most of this is due to the 3-D action, which makes the toothbrush not only rotate, but also pulsate.
- The easy control of the toothbrush is especially great.
- Your child does not have to bother with different functions and buttons.
Thanks to the child-friendly explanation and 30-second timer, daily dental care succeeds with confidence!
