The ION-Sei toothbrush is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-quality electric toothbrush. This brush uses ionic technology to provide superior plaque removal and gentle brushing action. Its three cleaning modes – normal, soft, and massage – give you the flexibility to customize your brushing experience. The two-minute timer ensures that your teeth are fully cleaned every time.

The ION-Sei comes with a range of features that make it stand out from other models on the market. Its sonic wave system provides up to 30,000 strokes per minute, making it one of the most powerful electric toothbrushes on the market. It also has an LED display that shows you the time remaining in each brushing cycle. The brush also has three intensity levels, allowing you to adjust the power of the brushing sensation.

The ION-Sei is also a great choice for those with sensitive teeth and gums as its gentle brushing action helps reduce irritation. It also features an ergonomic handle which makes it comfortable to hold. The battery life is impressive too, lasting up to two weeks on a single charge.

Overall, the ION-Sei toothbrush is an excellent choice for those looking for a powerful and effective electric toothbrush. Its combination of advanced technology, convenience features and gentle cleaning make it one of the best brushes available. If you’re looking for a high-quality electric toothbrush that provides superior plaque removal, the ION-Sei is definitely worth considering.

ion sei toothbrush test

It’s rare that I test a new premium toothbrush.

Unknown manufacturers tend to focus on entry-level devices, leaving the top end to the old familiar brands of Sonicare or Oral-B.

Not so the ION-Sei from Sanyei, which aims to win you over with a few interesting innovations:

  • The innovative ion technology is said to fight caries bacteria even more effectively than conventional toothbrushes.
  • And also otherwise differs the Japanese-German brush in the design & the equipment of established manufacturers.

In this comprehensive test, I address all the important questions before you buy. If you have little time, here is my brief summary:

The ION Sei has everything you need for healthy teeth. It reliably removes plaque and I simply enjoy holding it in my hand thanks to its minimalist design.

In view of the price, I would have liked a little more accessories such as a travel case for storage – that make other devices better.

For this, the 3 cleaning modes offer the right setting for every situation and the workmanship is also high quality.

This slim toothbrush convinces with excellent cleaning performance and great design. Available in the colors “Day White” & “Lake Blue”

You are also welcome to read the full review, in which I go into more detail about all the strengths & weaknesses:

Unpacking & First impression

I really like the design of the ION-Sei – it looks minimalist & uncluttered.

ion sei design

Compared to many other toothbrushes (which seem cluttered with umpteen buttons, flashing lights & complicated labels), this sonic toothbrush looks just great.

On the front you will find only an on-off button and 3 LED lights each (for the cleaning modes & the battery level). Even a child can operate the ION-Sei in a jiffy.

Small & compact

When unpacked, the next surprise immediately follows:

  • The ION-Sei seems significantly handier than many other electric toothbrushes.
  • This is not only due to the slim design, but also the low weight.

It weighs less than 100 grams (most competing products are noticeably heavier).

This makes the waterproof ION-Sei in my opinion a recommendable travel toothbrush, because the rest of the equipment (charger) also turns out compact.

In view of the price, however, I would have expected at least a case for storage. In terms of equipment, other premium models such as the Sonicare DiamondClean have the nose in front.

Cleaning performance & Ion technology

Much more important than the accessories of an electric toothbrush, however, is of course the brushing itself.

After all, the new device should ensure healthy teeth & prevent costly treatments at the dentist.

ion sei colors

The ION-Sei is also available in a soft blue.

For this, the ION-Sei relies on its namesake ion technology, which is said to prevent the growth of tooth decay better than conventional toothbrushes.

How ionic technology works

In the toothbrush, UV light hits a built-in titanium dioxide rod, creating negatively charged ions.

According to some studies, these are said to slow down bacterial growth on teeth & thus protecting against cavities.

Tests in the laboratory, however, often differ from reality – so what good are these “superpowers” (O-tone marketing) really?

The ions in practice

One thing first: Unfortunately, I can only tell you about my personal experiences when cleaning.

I do not have a lab in my basement, nor do I have a physics degree behind me.

  • To test the effectiveness of ionic technology, I rely solely on my experience with over 50 electric toothbrushes.
  • To make a long story short: Revolutionary differences from other premium toothbrushes I have not noticed.

After brushing, the teeth appear smooth & remain so for a long time. However, even the ions can not prevent new plaque.

After an extensive breakfast with lots of carbohydrates, some time later I feel just as much plaque as with other models – in “real” life there are just many more causes for new caries bacteria than in the clean laboratory.

So to me, the ionic technology seems more like a gimmick (similar to the UV disinfection of the Sonicare Flexcare Platinum).

Maybe there is even a small benefit, but it doesn’t turn out big in everyday brushing.

The cleaning performance of the ION-Sei convinced

This sounds very negative now, but overall the toothbrush tested here is clearly one of the best models currently available.

I find the pleasant operating noise particularly great: the ION-Sei is one of the quietest brushes ever & hums pleasantly at all times.

The ION-Sei impresses with a great cleaning – the brush also does most of the work for you when it comes to dental care.

After brushing, as already mentioned, the teeth feel very smooth (and if you abstain from sugar & carbohydrates in the hours afterwards, virtually no new plaque will form on them either).

Furthermore, a timer is built in to help you stick to the recommended brushing time.

Every 30 seconds, the ION-Sei also vibrates briefly – a reminder to change the area you’re brushing (this ensures your dentures are cleaned evenly)

Cleaning modes at a glance

The available settings round off the positive impression. In everyday use, you can choose from 3 different modes:

  1. Gentle – for gentle tooth cleaning
  2. Standard – for daily tooth cleaning
  3. Deep cleaning – for intensive tooth cleaning

Personally, the standard level is sufficient for me in most cases – only now & then I use the deep cleaning, for example, to polish the front teeth & to ensure white teeth.

I recommend the gentle setting for those who suffer from sensitive teeth & irritated gums. Then it may also be useful to change the brush head:

Ion Sei replacement brush heads

Included in the package are 2 variants (soft and standard).

This fits most users & gives you the opportunity to find your preferred variant.

  • There is also another version: compact soft. With the you can even get to hard-to-reach places like the back molars.
  • Together with this version, the ION-Sei is also suitable for children (due to the low weight, the little ones, as mentioned, have no problems with the application).

The replacement brush heads are currently only available for purchase on the Internet – so if you urgently want to get supplies, this is the only way. Here, established manufacturers are ahead of the game (Oral-B attachment brush heads are also available at the drugstore).

In my experience, however, this is not a major disadvantage. Suitable brush heads for the ION-Sei gibt’s e.g. on Amazon in all versions:

For most of us, the standard brush heads are the most recommended version.

The follow-up costs are similar to those of other manufacturers. Per year you should plan around 20€ for replacement brushes. No bargain, but in the long run still cheaper than expensive & painful treatments at the dentist.

Battery & durability

The ION-Sei lasted more than 2 weeks in testing before needing to be plugged back into the USB.

  • So you can take the toothbrush on short trips & or on vacation with a clear conscience.
  • Nervous continuous charging – a common weakness with cheaper brushes – is also eliminated.

You should do without continuous charging anyway, because unfortunately the manufacturer relies on a NiMH battery.

NiMH batteries & the durability

These suffer (unlike more modern batteries such as in cell phones) strongly from the so-called memory effect:

Otherwise, the memory effect strikes and the life (and performance of the battery) suffers. Here, given the price, I would have liked to see modern lithium-ion batteries that do not have these weaknesses.

All in all: I still find the battery of the ION-Sei sufficient due to the many reserves. However, it cannot really impress in this area.

Conclusion on the ION sei

It’s rare for new manufacturers to take on a premium toothbrush

Most challengers focus on the budget range and forgo novel features & interesting functions.

  • The ION-Sei Japanese-German manufacturer Sanyei is an interesting toothbrush for this reason alone.
  • And after testing it, I have to say: the slim toothbrush certainly got off to a good start.

While there are minor weaknesses such as the “only” functional battery & the ion technology, from which I expected more.

But it shines at the most important feature of an electric sonic toothbrush: it offers excellent brushing performance & cleans better than any manual toothbrush

  • In addition, there is the successful design, which is one of the biggest plus points for me. The ION-Sei looks great and has a compact design
  • It just feels good in the hand & it’s fun to clean with it (or even just to catch sight of it in the bathroom).

So compared to many cheap devices, I can only recommend the ION-Sei.

It offers a successful overall package of cleaning performance, workmanship & design that stands out clearly from most other toothbrushes.
