Whitening Mouthwash Buyer’s Guide: Quick & Effective Whitening
One of the most overlooked areas that we should address centers around whitening mouthwashes. Not all formulas are created equally and there are some factors to consider. Let us go ahead and take a look at how to determine what brand is the best whitening mouthwash for your needs.
Whitening mouthwashes use hydrogen peroxide and phosphoric or citric acids to dissolve the protective protein pellicle. Some also include pyrophosphates that prevent new stains from sticking to teeth. Like regular mouthwashes, the whitening version is swished around the mouth, but up to 60 seconds rather than 30 seconds.
Dr. Marina Shraga recommended that whitening rinses be used twice a day usually in conjunction with whitening toothpaste. Some products claim that users will see results (about one or two shades) within a week, while others claim to take about 12 weeks to see results.
The Active Ingredient
Mouthwash ingredients, of course, directly affect its properties, its taste, feel, and intensity.
They’re arguably the most important single factor in determining the best teeth whitening products.
So, what kinds of ingredients are there?
Alcohol: is used to sterilize and kill bacteria in mouthwash. Dentists agree that it’s a good thing, but those with sensitive teeth may find alcohol too harsh for them.
Tetrasodium pyrophosphate: an agent which can help prevent tartar buildup on teeth as well as whiten teeth by removing some stains from the surface of your enamel without any abrasives or chemicals (this ingredient also appears in many toothpastes).
Sodium fluoride: this chemical helps remove plaque, reduce gum inflammation and prevents cavities – all at once! It’s known to be the most effective anticavity agent available; however there are studies suggesting its safety is not yet proven enough to use in mouthwash.
Menthol: this ingredient gives the “tingling” sensation that most people associate with a fresh, clean feeling and it also helps to numb your gums (this is helpful for those who have sensitive teeth). This chemical also appears in many toothpastes as well.
Xylitol: an all natural sweetener that can reduce bacteria levels by up to 50% – even more than alcohol! It’s naturally occurring, so there are no artificial ingredients or preservatives here; however xylitol may not be safe for diabetics.
Calendula extract: calendula has been known to help heal wounds and promote healthy skin growth while killing off some types of bad bacteria.
Aloe Vera extract: Aloe is a plant that has long been known for its use in skin care and oral health. It’s soothing to the mouth, prevents tooth decay by remineralizing teeth enamel with calcium and fluoride (just like sodium fluoride), as well as keeping gums healthy.
“Organic” claim: This means it was created from ingredients grown without pesticides or herbicides; there are also no artificial colors or flavors present here! This product is vegan too.
Vegan/Gluten-Free: These terms refer to dietary restrictions – this label will let you know that the product does not contain any animal products nor gluten grains such as wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, etc.
Certified USDA Organic: This means that the product is certified to be made without any artificial ingredients, colors, or flavors. It must also come from plants and animals raised using sustainable practices; this label ensures your mouthwash was not created in a lab with synthetic chemicals but rather by real food!
Hydrogen Peroxide: this ingredient is high in oxygen and has been known to remove stains from teeth, enamel, gums, etc. It’s also an antibacterial agent which makes it useful for fighting plaque bacteria; however hydrogen peroxide can be harmful if swallowed so don’t use more than the recommended amount on your toothbrush (it should only touch a few bristles).
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: This chemical is often used as a foaming agent or detergent in most mouthwashes but some people have found that sodium lauryl sulfate causes their mouths to feel dryer and less “fresh.”
Potassium Nitrate: Potassium nitrate helps whiten teeth by removing surface stains with abrasive particles without any harsh chemicals mouthwashes but some people have found that alcohol is too harsh for them.
Nearly every mouthwash on the market contains a chemical known as hydrogen peroxide. This is the primary bleaching agent that will help to remove those pesky stains from the surface of your teeth. However, the compound is diluted enough so that it will rarely cause pain to sensitive gums. This is not always the case with more powerful treatments such as professional bleaching.
Before we move ahead, there are two important points to make clear. When you begin to take this type of mouthwash, visit the dentist to make certain that you do not have any cavities. The hydrogen peroxide could actually make them worse. Secondly, this mouthwash should not be used by children who are less than 12 years old.
Brand Names
As with any over-the-counter dental treatment, it is ALWAYS important to choose brand names. These will be backed up by thorough laboratory testing and the ingredients are all clearly labelled. According to recent studies, many consumers feel that the top three whitening formulas are:
- Listerine Whitening
- Crest 3D White Arctic Fresh
- Rembrandt Deeply White
Of course, we should note that these are not the only options and depending upon the availability in your area, there could be other brands worth examining. If you have any doubts, be sure to perform some research online. As opposed to navigating to the website of a specific company, it is best to take a look at third-party review sites. These will provide objective opinions and it is common to encounter feedback from individual users. Word of mouth is the best way to make an informed choice.
Pros and Cons
Pros: Mouthwashes have the same advantage as whitening toothpaste. One can replace a standard mouthwash by a whitening one without changing their daily routine as both products are used the same way.
Whitening products can help remove surface stains from teeth, giving you a whiter smile in as little as two weeks. They also reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease which will not only make your mouth healthier but prevent bad breath!
Cons: The main downside to them is that the peroxide or another brightening ingredient only comes in contact with teeth for about 60 seconds two times a day, unlike whitening gels or strips that are in contact with teeth for 30 minutes or more, so results are limited. Nevertheless, for managing day-to-day stains or maintaining a previous whitening treatment, it is a practical and easy-to-use method.
Some people find that whiteners leave their mouths feeling dry or irritated; this is especially true for those with sensitive teeth who are prone to irritation. There’s also some speculation about how safe it is to use hydrogen peroxide-based whiteners – there have been studies suggesting its safety is not yet proven enough so many dentists recommend against using it on your own at home without direction from them first.
Step-by-step guidance – how to use teeth whitening mouthwash effectively?
The basic thing that you should keep in mind when using the teeth whitening mouthwash is that you should use the mouthwash regularly. Even the best whitening mouthwash will not give the best results if not used in a regular manner. Here are some of the easy steps in which you can use the whitening mouthwash for getting the best results:
- Select the right teeth whitening mouthwash according to your dental history.
- Use the right amount of mouthwash. Take the proper dosage of the mouthwash in a small cup for using it properly.
- Pour the mouthwash dosage in your mouth.
- Swish the mouthwash in your mouth while keeping it closed for about 30 seconds or for about a minute. If you are not sure then you can swish according to the directions mentioned on the bottle.
- After swishing the mouthwash properly, spit it out. Make sure that you don’t swallow the mouthwash and if anything like this happens immediately get in touch with an expert.
- Most people don’t know it but you must wait for about 30 minutes before eating or drinking something after using the teeth whitening mouthwash. This allows the solution to deliver its best results.
Choosing The Right Teeth Whitening Mouthwash For Beautiful Smile in 2021
When it comes to teeth-whitening mouthwash, one must know exactly what to look for to avoid any long-term side effects. We say this because some teeth-whitening products will contain hazardous chemicals which have the potential to damage not only the teeth but the gums as well if used in larger doses.
To avoid this, you want to pay close attention to the ingredients and to spend that extra minute looking for any damaging effects long-term exposure to those ingredients might cause.
If you cannot be bothered to check what each ingredient does, you should at least choose a mouthwash based on the following criteria:

Verdict
Whitening mouthwashes are another easy-to-use method of brightening teeth. Using them is considered a part of a healthy, routine oral hygiene maintenance plan. Now whitening washes can help whiten while they freshen.
The best whitening mouthwash, when used every day, is one of the simplest and quickest ways of attaining whiter and brighter teeth. However, to prevent pain or discomfort when using a mouthwash it is important that you do not have cavities or any oral problems. For best results, it is highly recommended to use a whitening mouthwash along with whitening toothpaste.
Whether you want a product that contains lots of natural and/or organic ingredients because you live a green lifestyle, you’re looking for the best whitening mouthwash for sensitive teeth, or you want the fastest whitening possible, one of these ten picks is perfect for you.
Rinsing after using whitening mouthwash? If I rinse my mouth out with water after using a whitening mouthwash/rinse will it still work? Or does rinsing defeat the purpose??
im not that english but heres..:P noo it wont get out their effects… whitening and bleaching products removes the stains from the teeth for a better whiteness but it can hurt ur teeth enamels and u will feel ur teeth sensitive if u do them too much, after using whitening mouthwash make sure u brush with a florid toothpaste to stop those products bad effects, then rinse ur mouth afterward :)…hear it from me , dont use such products if u want white teeth , go for a zoom lightning , a half hour for about 2-3 years white teeth ..hope i helped
How effective is Listerine Whitening Mouthwash? In getting teeth whiter, I mean.
Make sure you get the ones that say Alcoholic Free. B/C alcohol in mouth washes are bad for your teeth. It’ll dry out your teeth. Whitening in general is bad for your teeth. It strips away the enamel and your teeth will become sensitive.
Crest 3D whitening, or Listerine whitening mouthwash? Which one works better? I’ve been using the new Crest 3D and the bottle is almost empty and not much difference (but my best friend used a lot too :/) should I give Crest 3D another chance? Or make the switch to Listerine whitening?
I prefer Crest 3D whitening myself. I love crest, so I may be biased. I would give it another shot, results may vary from individual to individual. Besides the Crest 3D whitening rinse has the same ingredients as the crest white-strips, and is cheaper!
Does “whitening” toothpaste/mouthwash really work?
Over a period of time (usually 2-4 weeks) you can see a little difference, but they are more for keeping teeth whiter longer between whitenings in addition to changing habits such as smoking, soda, etc.
What is the best mouthwash for whitening teeth?
Mouthrinses and mouthwashes are not intended to replace tooth brushing. It is important to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. One of those times should be before going to bed to remove all food particles from teeth and prevent the length of attacks by food on teeth. Using a rinse after brushing can help freshen breath and prevent tooth decay.
I just bought the Oral Essentials Whitening Mouthwash today and I’ve used it twice already (day and night). I was nervous to try it because I heard mouthwash burns and tastes bad. It actually did not burn at all and it had no bad taste. =)
Ive been using Crest 3D White Mouthwash for the last 4 years now and I have ppl come up to me all the time and ask how I get my teeth so white…….The 60oz bottle last me 3months if I use morning and night and at $8 a bottle an around $32 a year it’s worth it for white teeth…..ppl just want that overnight method be patient
Sadly with depression, I’ve been taking care of my teeth. They’ve turned pretty yellow, and it’s gross, I look back on pictures of a year or two ago, and they were sparkling white. I want to buy a mouth wash that will take care of that because whitening strips are too expensive to buy right now. What’s the best mouth wash to buy that’ll help me?
Try skipping the mouthwash and just using a good whitening toothpaste. I recommend Colgate optic white to people. It works better than the tooth whitening procedure at my work and is gentle safe and cheap.
I second Colgate optic white toothpaste, and maybe the matching mouthwash. Make sure to not fall for the charcoal whitening method as charcoal is a VERY harsh abrasive and can cause your enamel to break down. I know it’s advertised a lot online, but my dentist has warned me against anything with charcoal.
I hope everything in your life picks up! Wish you nothing but happiness and health
