Toothpaste is something that we use every day, yet most of us have no idea what actually goes into it. Well here at nbjcoalition.org, I’ve been working to uncover the truth about the toothpaste that we use and giving you a place to shop cruelty-free brands that offer vegan options.

What is in Toothpaste? – I took a look at all of the ingredients listed on my last tube of toothpaste and broke them down below: Glycerin – typically from a vegetable source but usually gets processed through animal fat. Carrageenan – thickening agent made from seaweed or algae Sodium Fluoride – typically made with bone char (charcoal or ash left over after animals are burned or killed). FD&C Dyes – colors added to make your toothpaste pretty; non-vegan Titanium Dioxide – used in white toothpastes for their brightening properties. Triclosan, Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), parabens, and microbeads are other ingredients that I didn’t find listed but aren’t vegan. Tocopheryl Acetate – vitamin E that can be derived from either plants or animals.

Vegan toothpaste Buying Tips – Cruelty-Free Toothpastes to Make You Say ‘Cheese’|

Untitled Design 5 2

The Benefits of Natural Toothpaste

Unlike regular toothpaste, vegan toothpaste is made entirely from organic and natural plant based ingredients. By being cruelty free, not only will you get the same cleaning effects as regularly toothpaste but you won’t be exposed to any nasty chemicals or toxins.

Currently over 95% of all toothpastes in the U.S contain fluoride. Considering fluoride has been linked to many health problems such as tooth discoloration, stomach ailments, skin rashes and impairment in glucose metabolism, do you really want this stuff in your body?

In fact, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requires a poison warning on every tube of fluoride toothpaste now sold in the US. Yikes!

If you don’t want this stuff in your body, then you should consider switching to fluoride free toothpaste that has a much safer formula. With natural toothpaste you can be confident that you won’t find any nasty chemicals in there while still getting the benefits.

When buying vegan toothpaste, it is important that you look out for certain ingredients in this oral care product.

1. Xylitol

2. Stevia

  • Prevents tooth decay, gingivitis and cavities
  • Contains natural anti- septic, antioxidant , anti- bacterial and anti- microbial properties for good oral health

3. Neem leaf Extract

4. Baking Soda

  • Helps polish teeth, making them appear whiter and brighter
  • Eliminates plaque deposits from teeth
  • Fight bad breath

Best Cruelty-Free Brands

I’ll pinpoint specific products in a moment, but first let me list some brands that are cruelty-free and offer oral care products:

Buying vegan toothpaste can help you provide all benefits require for good oral health. Apart from providing thorough cleansing, whitening, fresher breath, the natural toothpaste with its healing properties help provide you with superior dental protection and helps keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What Do Dentists Think?

However, fluoride is viewed as a vital component in our dental care because it helps to keep teeth strong and healthy and fight off cavities which is why it is contained in so many brand’s toothpastes. Dentists encourage the use of fluoride toothpastes so it is really up to you whether or not you want to believe that the small amounts of fluoride it contains are toxic.

It’s notjust toothpaste that vegans have to consider when it comes to at-home dental routine. They also have to consider their mouthwash and dental floss. Mouthwashes often contain added fluoride and floss is coated in a thin wax which is not always vegan.

If you want to try out some natural vegan dental products, you can often find it stocked in health food stores. You may struggle to find it in your local supermarket or pharmacy. Alternatively, you’ll be able to find it online from sites such as Amazon!

What Do You Think?

We want to hear your thoughts on this! What do you think about natural toothpastes and mouthwashes? Or will you be sticking to the good old fluoride toothpaste that your dentist recommends? Let us know!

How to Choose the Right Toothpaste for Your Oral Health Needs

For most people, brushing teeth twice a day is a habitual chore, but little do they know that they can optimize their dental routine by selecting the right toothpaste. With the plethora of products on the market, choosing the right toothpaste can be overwhelming. However, it is essential to know which one is suitable for your dental needs since not all toothpaste is created equal. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the right toothpaste for your oral health needs.

Firstly, identify the specific oral problem you want to target. For instance, if you have sensitive teeth, look for toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate, which helps numb the area, alleviating the sensitivity. If you want to brighten your teeth, consider toothpaste that has whitening agents such as hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and activated charcoal. If you are prone to gum disease, opt for toothpaste that contains stannous fluoride since it has anti-microbial properties that reduce plaque and gingivitis.

Secondly, consider your age group. People in different age groups have different dental needs. For toddlers, use fluoride-free toothpaste since they have a higher risk of swallowing toothpaste. However, for children over three years old, use toothpaste that has a low dose of fluoride since it strengthens teeth and wards off cavities. For adults, toothpaste with fluoride and anti-bacterial agents helps to prevent cavities and gum disease.

Thirdly, take note of any allergies or sensitivities you may have. Some toothpaste brands contain certain ingredients that may irritate your mouth or make your allergies flare up. Be sure to read the ingredient list before purchasing any toothpaste.

Choosing the right toothpaste is crucial for optimal dental health, and it goes beyond merely choosing a brand that’s on sale or has a pleasant flavour. Instead, pay attention to your oral health needs, age, and allergens. With these factors in mind, you can select a toothpaste that will deliver the best results for you.

Ingredients to Avoid in Toothpaste: A Guide for Conscious Consumers

As conscious consumers, we are becoming increasingly aware of the potentially harmful chemicals and ingredients in the products we use on a daily basis. While toothpaste may seem like a harmless necessity, many commercial brands contain ingredients that are best avoided.

One common ingredient to watch out for is fluoride. While fluoride is often promoted as beneficial for dental health, excessive amounts can actually be harmful. Ingesting too much fluoride can lead to nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and, in severe cases, even seizures. Additionally, fluoride has been linked to thyroid problems and can cause discoloration of teeth if overused.

Another ingredient to avoid is triclosan, an antibacterial agent commonly found in many toothpastes. Triclosan can contribute to antibiotic resistance and disrupt the body’s natural hormone balance. It has also been linked to negative effects on the immune system and can harm aquatic wildlife when it enters water systems.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a foaming agent commonly used in toothpaste, but it can be irritating to some people’s skin and can potentially contribute to canker sores. It has also been linked to hormone disruption and may even be a carcinogen.

In conclusion, as conscious consumers, we should pay attention to the ingredients in our toothpaste and choose products without harmful chemicals. Some alternatives to consider include natural toothpaste brands that use ingredients like baking soda, coconut oil, and essential oils for a gentler yet effective cleaning experience. We should prioritize our health and well-being by being mindful of the products we use on a daily basis.
