Toothpaste is something that we use every day, yet most of us have no idea what actually goes into it. Well here at nbjcoalition.org, I’ve been working to uncover the truth about the toothpaste that we use and giving you a place to shop cruelty-free brands that offer vegan options.
What is in Toothpaste? – I took a look at all of the ingredients listed on my last tube of toothpaste and broke them down below: Glycerin – typically from a vegetable source but usually gets processed through animal fat. Carrageenan – thickening agent made from seaweed or algae Sodium Fluoride – typically made with bone char (charcoal or ash left over after animals are burned or killed). FD&C Dyes – colors added to make your toothpaste pretty; non-vegan Titanium Dioxide – used in white toothpastes for their brightening properties. Triclosan, Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), parabens, and microbeads are other ingredients that I didn’t find listed but aren’t vegan. Tocopheryl Acetate – vitamin E that can be derived from either plants or animals.

Vegan toothpaste Buying Tips – Cruelty-Free Toothpastes to Make You Say ‘Cheese’|
The Benefits of Natural Toothpaste
Unlike regular toothpaste, vegan toothpaste is made entirely from organic and natural plant based ingredients. By being cruelty free, not only will you get the same cleaning effects as regularly toothpaste but you won’t be exposed to any nasty chemicals or toxins.
Currently over 95% of all toothpastes in the U.S contain fluoride. Considering fluoride has been linked to many health problems such as tooth discoloration, stomach ailments, skin rashes and impairment in glucose metabolism, do you really want this stuff in your body?
In fact, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requires a poison warning on every tube of fluoride toothpaste now sold in the US. Yikes!
If you don’t want this stuff in your body, then you should consider switching to fluoride free toothpaste that has a much safer formula. With natural toothpaste you can be confident that you won’t find any nasty chemicals in there while still getting the benefits.
When buying vegan toothpaste, it is important that you look out for certain ingredients in this oral care product.

What Do Dentists Think?
However, fluoride is viewed as a vital component in our dental care because it helps to keep teeth strong and healthy and fight off cavities which is why it is contained in so many brand’s toothpastes. Dentists encourage the use of fluoride toothpastes so it is really up to you whether or not you want to believe that the small amounts of fluoride it contains are toxic.
It’s notjust toothpaste that vegans have to consider when it comes to at-home dental routine. They also have to consider their mouthwash and dental floss. Mouthwashes often contain added fluoride and floss is coated in a thin wax which is not always vegan.
If you want to try out some natural vegan dental products, you can often find it stocked in health food stores. You may struggle to find it in your local supermarket or pharmacy. Alternatively, you’ll be able to find it online from sites such as Amazon!
What Do You Think?
We want to hear your thoughts on this! What do you think about natural toothpastes and mouthwashes? Or will you be sticking to the good old fluoride toothpaste that your dentist recommends? Let us know!
Hello Dr. Marina Shraga!
We are currently using Tom’s of Maine, a cruelty-free toothpaste. However, we wish to find a new toothpaste because we found out that the company tests on animals on their other line of business. We would like one with whitening please. We are buying this for our family and one person has braces. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!
I like JĀSÖN and Davids Natural Toothpaste. Try just using some pure baking soda; I just throw a spoonful in my mouth and brush away. I’ve been using this method for two months now and, honestly, my teeth are wonderfully white and my mouth always feels extremely fresh afterwards. Obviously do not neglect using a tongue-scraper and floss. My dental technician is actually the one who suggested I try this. Works great as a de-odorant too!
Although I’ve been vegan for 8 years, I never knew that all of the major brands of toothpaste contain a milk-derived sugar. (Seriously, WHY???)
My wife snagged Jason Sea Fresh Toothpaste at Target the other day and I was very pleasantly surprised by its taste and the fact that it’s fluoridated. Anyway, happy brushing!
Recently as a part of my transition to a more Vegan-friendly lifestyle, I’ve been using JASON brand toothpaste which is Vegan (they should pay me for this post .) I went to the dentist recently, and the person working on me told me that this kind of toothpaste doesn’t have fluoride, so it doesn’t protect against cavities as well.
My teeth were fine, but the way she talked about it had me concerned.
As I understand it, Colgate and Crest’s brands aren’t vegan, and when I asked her about whether they had ingredients derived from or tested on animals, she said she didn’t think so. She said that since I’m not eating it, then it wasn’t violating my vegetarianism (I guess she didn’t understand what Vegan beliefs entail.)
So anyone has any problems with their dentist because of their toothpaste choices? Does anyone have any brands that they like?
