Gingivitis Mouthwash Buyer’s Guide
What Are The Benefits and Risks of Using a Mouthwash
Many people believe that mouthwash is useful only for making your breath smell minty. However, researchers have found out that mouthwash is more than just a breath freshener.
Brushing and flossing are the best ways to avoid oral diseases. But if you add mouthwash to the equation, then you are bound to have healthy teeth. Mouthwash plays an important role in the fight against tooth decay and increase the health of your teeth and gums for a lifetime.
Benefits of Mouthwash
It freshens your breath: The primary benefit of mouthwash is obviously to reduce bad breath. It kills the bacteria causing bad breath. Mouthwashes come in a lot of flavors and leaves you with minty breath.
Stops cavities from forming: Regular use of mouthwash prevents the formation of cavity, especially when done before or after flossing. The fluoride present in mouthwashes strengthens your enamel and reduces the chances of a cavity forming.
However, not all mouthwashes contain fluoride. So, before you buy make sure that the mouthwash has fluoride in it.
Prevents plaque build up: Plaque build up is a very common problem that forces you to take a dentist appointment. Mouthwashes prevents plaque build up on your gums, in-between teeth and on the surface of your teeth.
Mouthwash can prevent it, but cannot eliminate the already existing plaque. So make sure to brush and floss to prevent the formation of plaque, before it becomes a problem.
Removes tiny particles between teeth: Most people use mouthwash only after brushing. But, if mouthwash is used prior to it, it can get rid of the small particles that gets stuck between your teeth.
Rinsing at the end can also help with pieces that the floss or toothbrush failed to reach.
Kills germs and bacteria: Brushing and Flossing helps to remove particles, scrub away plaque and also strengthens the gums. But, they are not very effective in killing the germs and bacteria that are present in your mouth.
By using good quality mouthwashes, most of the germs and bacteria are killed on contact. Thus, it helps in the prevention of oral diseases that are caused by influx of bacteria, such as gingivitis.
What Are The Risk of Using a Mouthwash?
Irritates canker sores: If the alcohol content in the mouthwash is high, then it may irritate the canker sore more than helping it.
Oral cancer: There have been many debates regarding the chances of a mouthwash causing oral cancer.According to studies, if the alcohol content is high then it may cause cancer. Although it is unlikely, but is still a risk.
May increase your blood pressure: According to a Swedish study, mouthwashes may raise your blood pressure by killing off bacteria that help blood vessels relax.
Although there may be some risks associated with the use of mouthwash, but the pros outweigh the cons. Mouthwash has these awesome benefits that brushing and flossing can’t handle alone. Adding mouthwash to your oral routine will give you that extra bit of protection and also leave you with a fresh breath.
How to choose the Best Mouthwash for gingivitis?
When buying a mouthwash for gingivitis, always choose one that has bacteria fighting ingredient (Chlorhexidine). why do i always feel hungry after i use mouthwash? is this normal?
i use mouthwash twice a day.
i always seem to feel hungry after using a mouthwash even though ive just eaten.
at first i thought i was genuinely hungry so each time i use a mouth wash i would grab something small to eat afterwards so it pretty much ruins it..
i then got the idea since it was ruining the mouthwash’s job in the first place. of trying to eat before using the mouth wash.so now i always eat breakfast and dinner first and brush my teeth and do a mouthwash straight after both those meals yet i get i still always get a hungry feeling in my stomach like my stomach is empty when i know ive just eaten and its not. it makes my tummy feel realllly hungry like the feeling u get when your stomach makes noises except there is no noises so its a aweful feeling.
it only happens after i use mouthwash and the feeling stays for the next 1-2 hours after it. :s does anyone else experience this? can anyone explain why i feel this way?
Well, maybe your body is in want of a drink of water. New research has found that mouthwash, which works well at first, will actually dry your mouth and throat out which will cause bad breath, plaque and bacteria build-up much quicker. Maybe if you just drank a cup of water afterwards, it might make you feel better. I hope this helps.
Why are there flakes in my mouthwash?
I’ve never paid much attention to it before, but every time I brush my teeth and then use mouthwash, there are dark colored flakes when I spit out. Like when I use the green Listerine, there were dark green flakes. I always figured the mouthwash had particles in it and never though about it.
I just switched to Crest Prohealth and it’s purple, and when I spit that out I have dark purple flakes. I inspected the bottle and the mouthwash is perfectly clear, no flakes in it.
So I tried googling my conundrum like I do most of my daily questions regarding life, but apparently mouth wash is a cure for dandruff (who’da thunk it?) so my google searches don’t give me my answers, and so I turn to you!
Have you ever noticed flakes when you spit mouthwash? WHAT ARE THEY? What causes them? My boyfriend thinks they are left over food *gag* but I would think the TOOTHBRUSH would get that out lol… Anyway… Help!
Its food debris but mainly congealed saliva..if you swig from the bottle you will eventually see it in there!!
Gross, so don’t!
How can I get rid of gingivitis through lemongrass oil mouthwash?
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum tissues surrounding the teeth. Gingivitis is caused by bacteria that are not regularly removed from the tooth-gum interface. The body’s immune system induces inflammation as a response to infection. This is why gums bleed – they are inflamed by your own immune system in response to bacteria.
Logically, to reverse gingivitis, one has to remove the bacteria causing gingivitis. Therefore, forget lemongrass oil and use your toothbrush instead. Brush away the bacteria that are beneath the gum-tooth margin (called the sulcus). Floss between the teeth to remove the bacteria there. Consider a mouthwash such as Listerine, which is clinically proven to resolve gingivitis. Also consider getting a professional cleaning to remove difficult deposits of tartar, which can’t be removed by brushing and flossing. Do these things and gingivitis will resolve.
I have receding gums above a few of my teeth.
I’ve seen a dentist about it and he wasn’t much help. He bascially told me there was nothing he could do about it, and that if it could worse, he’d have to surgically repair it (apparently by taking some tissue from my cheek and sticking onto the gum, or something like that).
His advice: “don’t brush so hard.” The time I saw him before that he said I had a buildup of plaque and needed to brush more aggressively Huh
I’ve done a bit of reading about oil pulling – a technique where you essentially swish a particular oil around in your mouth – as a cure for gum recession. Coconut oil is commonly cited as a good treatment, and I’ve heard of people having success using apple cider vinegar.
Has anyone had experience with this?
An oral hygienist will give you better advice than a dentist in this case.
I had the same problem, it appears to be due to plague building between the teeth and gums (according to my oral hygienist) that cause inflammation of the gums and encourages them to retreat.
She told me to do the following:
– floss every second day
– brush teeth with the left hand (it’s harder to use excess pressure if you’re using your non-dominant hand)
– rinse with salt water after brushing
– come in at least once a year for a proper clean, since brushing will not remove all the plaque.
My gum line improved slowly after taking the above advice, although these days I add baking soda to the salt water rinse.
What’s the best nonprescription mouthwash for gingivitis?
The single best thing you can do for gingivitis is thorough cleaning using the modified bass technique and a correct flossing or TePe technique. Mouthwash is just an adjunct to these. That being said, a short course of corsodyl can be beneficial.
